Breathing with Eyes Open

When we think of meditation, we often imagine sitting with closed eyes in complete silence. But here’s the truth: you can meditate anywhere, even with your eyes open. Conscious breathing doesn’t require a quiet room or a cushion — it requires awareness.

Why practice with eyes open? Because life happens with eyes open. Learning to breathe mindfully in everyday situations means you can stay calm in a meeting, grounded in traffic or present during a conversation.

Try this: Soft Gaze Breathing

  1. Find a comfortable position—sitting or standing.
  2. Soften your gaze. Don’t stare at one point, just let your eyes relax.
  3. Take a slow breath in through your nose, count to 4.
  4. Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of 6.
  5. Repeat for 5 breaths, keeping your eyes softly open.

You can do this while walking, waiting for the train or even during work breaks. It’s a powerful way to turn ordinary moments into mindfulness practice.

Today’s challenge: Pick one daily activity—like drinking coffee or waiting at a stoplight — and practice conscious breathing with your eyes open. Over time, you’ll discover that meditation isn’t something you do. It becomes the way you live.
